Preparing for Wine On Water

It’s a great time of the year to be in St Francis.
There are notably fewer people than over the holiday seasons. The weather is generally fine, the wind is a little less than usual, and some exciting happenings in and around the village.
The next big thing to be happening to St Francis Bay is the Wine On Water Festival this weekend. It is a wine tasting festival, a wine extravaganza if you like, but with all proceeds going to charity. Organized by Rotary, the Wine On Water festival has the backing of Investec. Still, it hasn’t had the chance to run over the last two years due to COVID. So this weekend has been a long time coming.
When an event of this magnitude comes to town, there are always a few teething problems and a few nerves. So without wishing to detract from what will be a fantastic weekend, we would like to advise the following basic, almost common-sense rules when jolling at the WOW.
There are basic rules of etiquette for Wine On Water. For example, don’t eat, drink, or even smoke on the barges, obey the jetty manager, no children, no dogs, and no high heels.
Then there is are rules of respect. The houses are private homes being used as part of the festival, with proceeds going to charity, so please respect these homes.
There are drinking rules. If a jetty manager or barge skipper doesn’t like how you’re swaying on the jetty, you might be refused access. This will be for your own safety, so best not to start fighting. It won’t end well.
Don’t drink and drive. There will be many people in the village this weekend, and although they won’t be on the barges or tasting the wines, there are loads of kids and teenagers around. We don’t want any silly Driving Under the Influence accidents, so please utilize the local taxi services.
Also, try and drink in moderation. This is a wine tasting function, and you want to make the right choices on your wine purchases. It is hard to go slow when the wines are delicious, but instead, hold back a bit until you’re safely at the Quays and on solid ground.
The final rule is to have fun but try and practice some zen. If there is a queue for a barge, just chill and wait for the queue to unblock. If there is a problem with wine availability or something else happens, just relax again. This is St Francis Bay, where there is no rush.
Remember there are also a few other options, like the 9 and Wine and a Recovery Run.

We are pleased to advise that our WOW committee has set the date for our inaugural WOW festival for the weekend of 25 and 26 February 2022.
Whilst we are sure many of you would liked to have seen an earlier date we believe that, under current Covid conditions, being cautious and prudent is the correct approach to take rather than being hasty and proved wrong.
So let’s all trust and hope that circumstances improve sufficiently early in the New Year in order for us to safely host this exciting event.
In the meantime stay safe and we’ll keep you informed closer to the time.
Kind regards,
Paul Sherman
Rotary member for Wine on Water

WINE ON WATER EVENT POSTPONED UNTIL REGULATIONS PERMIT US TO HAVE THE EVENT

Update on postponement of St Francis Rotary Club Wine on Water (WOW) weekend.
Our WOW committee has, in light of the current Covid situation, made a decision to postpone the event until such time that regulations permit us to safely schedule such an event.
Whilst we understand the disappointment in postponing such an exciting event, we were left with little option to do so
Our Rotary Club of St Francis identified WOW as a novel and fun-filled annual event which will serve as our key anchor fundraising project for the deserving local charities we support.
All funds raised from this event will be allocated to charities in the local disadvantaged community of Sea Vista township. These charities include, amongst others, Talhado Pre Primary School, Disney Creche, Sea Vista Primary School, the Medical Clinic, and various others.
Just as any project of this magnitude requires cash from ticket sales to fund setup costs, our Rotary Club has incurred significant setup costs that had to be covered by ticket sales. We, therefore, appeal to all ticket holders to retain their tickets for our rescheduled event. If personal circumstances do not permit ticket holders to attend the rescheduled event, we kindly request they consider donating their tickets to friends or family.
Alternatively, they could consider them as a donation to our Rotary Club for supporting our local charities as mentioned above.
We take this opportunity to thank many for their continued support for our exciting WOW event including homeowners, wine estates, our local business and restaurant community, our local authorities, and most importantly our ticket holders.

The brainchild of the Rotary Club Of St Francis, the Wine On Water festival is a unique concept that consists of those 20 fine wine estates setting up tasting decks at private homes on the canals in St Francis, and festival goers will be delivered on river barges to these tasting decks. It is a controlled environment, with water marshals, and systems in place to ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone.
This water-borne wine tasting concept is something quite inimitable and can only be pulled off in a place like St Francis Bay. With the remarkable canal systems, the beautiful houses, and the generous and accommodating local owners, the event is sure to be a huge success. The WoW committee has also stated that they will be using local vendors and suppliers where possible, and will only be reaching out beyond the area if needed. TOPS at the Superspar Village Square is the retail partner, and they will be processing wine orders for all customers.
WoW will take place on the 27th and 28th March. Tastings begin at 12 noon and ends at sunset on both days, when a whole new party kicks off at the Quaysyde Restaurant and marquee tent. There will be delicious, locally produced artisanal food available, more craft drinks on offer, live music for all with the Grosvenor Road Band, and a whole lot of good times to be had at Quaysyde. The night time entertainment will add another whole dimension to the weekend’s festivities.

St Francis Bay – Out of the traditional world of seated wine tasting and liberal palate cleansing, something original and fresh has emerged and is coming to the village of St Francis Bay. For those people who love to be on the fore-front of exciting occasions and happenings, this is one you do not want to miss out on.
What:
Wine On Water (WoW) is a brand-new wine tasting sensation coming to St Francis. It is a unique, water-transported wine tasting event that will see 20 wine estates set up in gorgeous houses on the canals, and will see water taxis delivering festival-goers to their wine tasting stations located at one splendid deck after another.
A hop-on hop-off experience, WoW is set to redefine wine tasting in the St Francis area, and the inaugural event is going to blow minds. It will deliver the basics of any traditional wine tasting event, being See, Swirl, Smell, Sip and of course Swallow, but by taking place on the splendid water-ways of the St Francis canals, it will be an incredible way to spend the weekend in St Francis. The 20 estates will have 120 of the best South African wines on offer, as well as some exquisite gin and rum tastings in the mix. There will be snacks and canapés at each deck to go with the tastings, so all patrons will be catered for.
Where:
WoW will be based at Quaysyde, with the wine tastings taking place on the decks of selected private homes on the canals. There will be 20 decks to visit over the two day period, and festival-goers will have their afternoons filled with fun, laughter and amazing wines as they cruise the canals in an innovative rendering of the traditional booze cruise.

When:
WoW will take place on the 27th and 28th March. Tastings begin at 12 noon and end at sunset on both days, when a whole new party kicks off at the Quaysyde Restaurant and marquee tent. There will be delicious, locally produced artisanal food available, more craft drinks on offer, live music for all and a whole lot of good times to be had at Quaysyde. The night time entertainment will add another whole dimension to the weekend’s festivities.
Why:
A team of dedicated St Francis Bay Rotarians are putting this great event together for the betterment of the village, and to uplift sections of the community less fortunate than themselves.
WoW organisers are only utilising local businesses, vendors and service providers for all their day-to-day needs over the two-day festival in a bid to make it a community-first project, and all proceeds from the weekend will go towards various St Francis Rotary projects in the region.
Who:
There will be a fine selection of some of the best wine producers in the country, with 20 of the top wine estates in attendance. Details to follow.
Tickets are R475pp and are limited. They can be booked here https://www.quicket.co.za/events/97240-wine-on-water-st-francis-bay/?preview=t#/
The tickets will definitely sell out for the inaugural year, so book early to avoid disappointment.
